Hands

Add a slice of fimo on the thumb underneath the nail. Blend the seams carefully with a sculpting tool (pict. 33). Draw lines in the knuckle with a small sculpting tool or toothpick (pict. 34).

Do the same with the knuckles on the fingers (pict. 35). Use your sculpting tool to shape the knuckles a bit more on the hand and draw little lines, look at your own hand as example (pict. 36).

Place a small slice of fimo on the wrist as in pict. 37, blend out the seams (pict. 38), don't make this knuckle/bone too big because this would look unnatural.

Bend the hand in the right pose. Cut off the arm at about 1 inch. Make holes in the arms with a wooden toothpick, be sure it's deep enough. Twist the stick a little to make the holes wider so it will fit the frame. The hand is now ready for curing in the oven (pict. 39).

I always use a small wooden board with big nails through it, to place the hands on while curing. This way you don't get press marks on the hands of the oven plate (pict. 40). Pre-heat the oven at 220-266 Fahrenheit and bake the hands for about 20 minutes. Let the hands cool off inside the oven. At pict. 41 the hand is cured.

You can give the hands a warmer tone by rubbing the hands with some make-up face powder, I usually do this with fairy hands. But for the hand in this lesson I used darkbrown patina (oilbased). You add the patina with a brush, paint it all over the hand (pict. 42). Then wipe it off with a piece of cloth so there will only be a light wash left (pict. 43). The paint also gets into the deeper areas of the hands like the lines and knuckles, this gives a nice effect.

Let it dry for a few hours. When it is dry it will have a matte finish (pict. 44).

Now you can paint the fingernails. You can use acrylic paint for this. I always mix some acrylics with acrylic extender, the paint will turn transparent and doesn't dry too fast.

With a thin paintbrush you can also paint the 'half moons' and 'nail borders' on the nails (pict. 45).

Let the paint dry, then add some Fimo gloss varnish to the nails and the hands are finished.
